what a wonderful story. I dont understand why people say he doesnt deserve mercy, he turned to God at the end and God is merciful beyond our understanding. God is good and merciful, we all get a chance to repent before death, not everyone takes it.

My parents drove my sister and me half mad. Narcissists. Mean. I'm 59 and I still have my cursing moments. And then other times: compassion. My moods still fluctuate towards them. And they are in their 80's. It's been over between me and them for years. Maybe in the next life.

Hard to believe it's been a few years since we posted this, but it's been interesting to read people's comments. Both those that actually show up, and those that UA-cam chooses to block (unfortunately). The angry responses to this video are often the most interesting, so if UA-cam blocked your comment then know that we are just as frustrated as you. Here are a few comments: 1. At 2:58 Jeff lists groups of people targeted by the Nazis. We've had a few comments from Jewish people that are offended that Jeff didn't list them first. I believe this is because he's trying to emphasize this story is from a Polish, Catholic priest's perspective - he isn't trying to minimize that the Holocaust was, first and foremost, a mass slaughter of the Jewish people. 2. Many people have one of two knee jerk responses to this story. It's either 1) quick and complete acceptance that a man guilty of unfathomable crimes was forgiven by God or 2) outrage that we would suggest that forgiveness for Hoess is even possible. What's interesting is that, whatever their side, people seem to form these opinions quickly and accept them completely, without thought for why the other side's opinions may have some validity. 3. From our point of view, the purpose of this video was not to suggest either but rather to pose a difficult hypothetical question using a real life situation. Given genuine repentance, could God forgive someone like this? For Christians, the parable that Jeff references toward the end seems to suggest the possibility - even though for us, the thought of forgiving someone who had killed your entire family (and millions more on top of that) seems impossible. 4. While it's very possible that Hoess's confession was insincere, we ultimately cannot know the true state of his soul at his death. However, if we assume that his confession was genuine, then we can ask very interesting questions, which are, "How far does God's mercy extend, and what does this look like?" For Christians, the Parable of the Vineyard Workers should be difficult, and this story illustrates why.

After almost a year and a half of virtual choirs, it looks like life might be getting back to normal. If so, it was great that we could end on a high note, with this one, created for Bellevue Presbyterian Church. Hopefully choirs can sing together again in person (without masks on) soon! :)
